KINKY BOOTS WITH HMOS - 2025

Returning to HMOS for my second Musical Directing role was an experience. It was one of those projects that reminded me of what’s important about being on a creative team and working together, but also what challenges we face as creatives in the amdram world! (But even more - I got to pull out all of my sparkly outfits for show week!)

First and foremost, it was a fantastic reunion with Della Bhujoo, the choreographer. Working together again felt easy, energising, and we were creatively aligned from day one. The collaboration between music and movement is so vital in a show like Kinky Boots, and it was a real pleasure to watch the production grow through that shared understanding and trust. Not only that, but she only bumped into the one and only Billy Porter during our show week, and got a beautiful good luck video from him! Talk about the universe being on our side!

The cast were a joy to work with. This was a hardworking, committed group of performers who consistently came prepared, ready to rehearse, refine, and push themselves further each session. The leads in particular set a brilliant example - always engaged, focused, positive, prepared and open to notes, which made such a difference in a demanding show like this.

A huge shout out must go to Freddie Brown (Charlie), David Gregory (Lola/Simon), Alex Goodden (Lauren), Teri-Ann Carter (Pat), Julie Antoniou (Trish), Maddy Bettany (Nicola), and the lovely Angels, particularly Luke Box who also supported with the Angel’s stunning hair and make-up. Each of them worked incredibly hard on their characters, embracing the challenge of stepping outside their comfort zones. Vocally, characteristically, and physically (heels included…) they showed real growth and dedication throughout the process. Watching them take risks, trust the process and the creatives, and fully embody their roles was genuinely rewarding.

A special mention must also go to the kids in the cast, who were truly impressive throughout the process. They were incredibly hardworking, focused, and professional, seamlessly working alongside the adult cast and rising to the demands of the show with maturity and enthusiasm. Their energy, commitment, and willingness to learn added so much to the rehearsal room and the final production. Equally, a heartfelt thank you to their parents, whose support and commitment made such a difference. From schedules and logistics to encouragement and consistency, their help behind the scenes was invaluable and deeply appreciated.

Another highlight of the production was working with the band. It was wonderful to reunite with familiar faces while also making new musical connections along the way. The energy from the band call, to the sitzprobe to the pit was consistently positive, collaborative, and musically driven, which elevated the entire production. And we had a lot of fun on the way with our usual banter and musical humour, all whilst still creating a high quality sound!

Kinky Boots is a show about acceptance, courage, and celebrating individuality. I’m incredibly grateful for the hard work that went into this, and proud of everyone involved for the passion, commitment, and heart they brought to the project. Even when faced with the many challenges that we were confronted with!
